Artist Statement of Ernst Paulduro

Since earliest childhood I always have been fascinated of nature and the variety of amazing wildlife. As every living being shows the wonder and beauty of nature for me it is very important to capture the typical anatomy and character of wildlife in my sculptures to achieve the most life-like appearance. This for me, as having an excellent education and immense knowledge as formerly I worked as a taxidermist, is a matter of course. Additionally a very important aspect is to have an unlimited patience e. g. when creating surface structures like hair or feathers with a needle.
If possible I mainly work from live studies. Otherwise very good reference photos taken myself are important for creating very best artwork, like portraits of famous animal personality’s e. g. ALBRECHT, the first captive bred Indian Rhinoceros at Tiergarten Nürnberg or furthermore SANDY a tame female Penguin at Allwetterzoo Münster.

After creating the models and regarding smaller to midsize pieces I do my own preparing of moulds, wax casts and also the final work like chiseling and patination. So just the raw bronze is made as lost-wax-process by the foundry.

All my bronze sculptures are available as limited editions. Single edition pieces are created on request

Following this he worked as a taxidermist with main focus on designing casts and models of fish, amphibians and reptiles and also to do their life-like painting. In 1992 he was appointed head of taxidermy department. With more than 20 years of knowledge of animal anatomy, their surface structures and their colours Ernst in 2003 decided to transfer his ability to work as a freelance wildlife sculptor and painter.

During his tenure as head of the Taxidermy Department he trained many apprentices in taxidermy, anatomy, sculpting and painting.

Influences / Inspiration of Ernst Paulduro

The German wildlife sculptors August Gaul, Joseph Pallenberg and Reinhard Dachlauer have inspired me from the beginning. Within my career as taxidermist I got knowledge of Carl Akeley the famous American taxidermist and wildlife sculptor who mainly worked for the Natural History Museum in New York and who created breath taking wildlife pieces and dioramas which are still on display. His fantastic work always was I my mind to switch from taxidermy to wildlife art.
My extremely detailed and mainly life-like artwork I describe as Hyperrealistic Sculptures in bronze.
